Branding vs. web design — what's the difference and which one do you need first?

A lot of small business owners confuse branding with web design. They're related — but they're not the same thing. Here's how to think about it and where to start.

Why your website is losing you clients before you ever say hello

Your audience makes a judgment call within 3 seconds of landing on your website. Three seconds. Before they read a word of your copy, before they see your prices, before they understand what you do — they've already decided whether they trust you.

If your site is slow, outdated, hard to navigate, or just doesn't look like it belongs to the same decade as your business, they're gone. And the worst part? You'll never know they were there.

The 3 things that kill trust instantly

1. A homepage that doesn't answer "what do you do?" in 5 seconds. Your hero section needs a clear headline, a short description, and a single call to action. That's it. If visitors have to hunt for what you offer, they won't.

2. A site that looks broken on mobile. Over 60% of web traffic is on mobile. If your site isn't responsive, you're essentially turning away more than half your potential clients before they read a single word.

3. No clear next step. Every page on your site should have one clear action you want the visitor to take. Book a call. Send a message. Buy now. If everything is equally important, nothing is.

What to fix first

Start with your homepage. Open it on your phone. Ask yourself honestly — if I knew nothing about this business, would I stay? Would I know what to do next? If the answer is no, it's time for an upgrade.

Your website should be your hardest-working team member — one that never sleeps, never calls in sick, and is always ready to make a first impression. Make sure it's representing you the way you deserve.

The $150/month website model that's changing how small businesses think about web design

For years, small business owners have faced an impossible choice: spend $2,000–$5,000 upfront on a custom website (which feels like a huge risk when you're not sure it'll pay off), or use a DIY builder that ends up looking exactly like every other small business website in your niche.

There's a third option that's changing everything — and it starts at $150/month.

What is Website as a Service?

Website as a Service (WaaS) flips the traditional model. Instead of paying a large upfront fee for a website that you then have to manage yourself, you pay a simple monthly rate that covers everything: design, hosting, maintenance, updates, security, and support.

No big invoice. No technical headaches. No wondering if your site is secure or up to date. Just a beautiful, professionally managed website that works for your business every single day.

Why it works for small businesses

The math is simple. A $150/month website subscription costs $1,800 over a year — similar to a one-time custom build. But unlike a one-time build, you're never stuck with an outdated site. It evolves with your business. Updates happen. Support is always there.

And the best part? You own everything. If you ever decide to leave, you take your site with you. No lock-in, no hostage situation.

At brandsbyRaven, we offer WaaS plans starting at $150/month for businesses ready to stop putting off their online presence and start showing up the way they deserve.

5 things every med spa website needs to book more clients

Most med spa websites look beautiful. The problem is they don't convert. They attract visitors and then lose them — not because the treatment isn't right, but because the website doesn't give people what they need to take the next step.

Here are the five things every med spa website needs to turn browsers into booked appointments.

1. A treatment menu that actually explains what you do

Vague service descriptions kill bookings. "Facial treatments" tells a potential client nothing. "HydraFacial — a 3-step treatment that deeply cleanses, extracts, and hydrates your skin for an immediate glow" tells them everything. Be specific. List benefits, not just names.

2. Real before and after photos

Stock photos won't cut it in aesthetics. Your potential clients want to see real results from real people who look like them. Even a handful of genuine before/after images will outperform the most beautiful stock photography every time.

3. An easy online booking system

If someone has to call you to book, you're losing clients. Period. At minimum, have a contact form that gets responded to within 24 hours. Better yet, integrate a real booking system like Vagaro, Mindbody, or Acuity so clients can book instantly at 11pm when they're finally thinking about self-care.

4. Clear pricing (or a clear reason why you don't show it)

Price transparency builds trust. If you can't show exact prices, at least show ranges. "Starting from $150" gives people enough to know if they're in the right ballpark — and it stops you from wasting time on consultations with people who can't afford your services.

5. A strong Google Business Profile linked from your site

Local search is how most med spa clients find you. Your website and Google Business Profile work together. Make sure they're connected, your reviews are prominent, and your location and hours are accurate everywhere.

How to write a Google Business Profile that actually shows up in search

Your Google Business Profile is often the very first thing a potential client sees when they search for a business like yours. It shows up before your website. Before your social media. Before anything else. And most business owners treat it like an afterthought.

The basics that most people skip

Your business description matters more than you think. Don't just describe what you do — use the words your clients actually search for. If you're a Pilates instructor in Richmond, your description should include "Pilates instructor Richmond VA," "mat Pilates classes," and "private Pilates sessions." Google reads this and uses it to decide when to show you in search results.

Choose the right primary category. This is the single most important factor in local search ranking. Be as specific as possible. "Pilates studio" beats "fitness center" every time if Pilates is what you do.

The things that actually move the needle

Post to your Google Business Profile at least once a week — just like social media. Respond to every review, good and bad. Add photos regularly. These signals tell Google your business is active and engaged, which pushes you higher in local results.

And ask for reviews. Every happy client is a potential 5-star review. A simple "it would mean so much if you left us a Google review" goes further than any ad campaign.

Branding vs. web design — what's the difference and which one do you need first?

This is one of the most common questions I get from new business owners: "Do I need branding or a website first?" The confusion is understandable — the two are deeply connected. But they're not the same thing, and understanding the difference will save you time, money, and a lot of frustration.

What is branding?

Branding is the foundation. It's the visual and emotional identity of your business — your logo, your color palette, your typography, your voice, your values. It's the answer to "how does my business look, sound, and feel?" Good branding makes your business instantly recognizable and tells the right people that you're for them.

What is web design?

Web design is the structure. It's how your brand shows up in the digital world — the layout, the pages, the user experience, the conversion strategy. A good website takes your brand and builds a home for it online that turns visitors into clients.

Which comes first?

Almost always: branding first, web design second. Here's why — your website is built on your brand. The colors, fonts, imagery style, and tone of your website all flow from your brand identity. If you build a website before you have a clear brand, you'll likely end up rebuilding it (or at least redesigning it significantly) once you figure out who you are.

That said, if you're just starting out and need to get online quickly, a simple website with a working logo is better than no website at all. You can always evolve both over time. Done is better than perfect — especially when clients are waiting.
